Open Space - Session 1 - 6th May 2020
Every week we will be running chaired Open Space discussions with our driver community.
Drivers pick a discussion topic each week and we provide a free space for them to share their views, listen to others and connect.
We will keep a note of the headline themes so we can share with the group and the community after each session.
Session 1: What do you think about the amount of available Parking and facilities?
Summary:
The majority of parking facilities are not up to an acceptable standard. Many have communal facilities, limited parking spaces and poor-quality food options. Security also seemed to be an issue throughout with little to no marshalling.
Best Parking Places Mentioned
Rothwell Truck Stop
Formula Services
Red Lion
Colsterworth truck stop
Worst Parking Places Mentioned
Tamworth Services
Services:
- Parking facilities can be a 20 minute walk from the other facilities for drivers, which means it can be challenging to find a space, park up, use the toilet, grab a bite to eat and then walk back within a 45 minute break.
- Food vouchers tend to only be linked to the fast food options at the services, making it harder to eat healthily.
- Parking starts running out at around 5pm, with many struggling after 7pm.
Dedicated Truck Stops:
- Overall this was the preferred option by the group, however the facilities were seen to be lacking overall.
- Parking availability was also an issue, however space allocation was conserved to be more organised, so your chance of getting stuck in was lower.
Layby and Industrial Estates:
- While some favour these areas as they tend to be quieter, it can be hard to find one that’s available (stressful when running out of hours), plus food options are usually limited / non-existent.
- They are often used and abused with people dumping rubbish and toilet waste.
- The government is thought to be trying to stop drivers taking weekend / 45hr breaks in them.
What's Next?
Our next session is planned for the 13th May 2020 where we will be discussing - how do you feel being called heroes and do you think the role is respected enough? If you want to get involved you can register your interest here.
