improved Driver Performance Case Study - £0.02 a mile saving, Advanced Supply Chain Group
“Our top of the range Mercedes Actros 5 product with Predictive Powertrain Control, an innovative system which is challenging to the driving workforce is key to our performance and service. The overall economy of a truck is determined by many factors. Some cannot be influenced. But others can with the driving style being the main element.
Driver performance makes a big difference to the overall performance of my business unit, provides in-depth details to our valued customers in regard to CO2 emissions to support collectively governments emissions reductions plans. We train, coach, monitor and report all our driver scores for our own drivers, investing time and resources to improve their operational performance.
We are now able to take a similar approach with the flex drivers we book through the Connected2 platform. We are able to build stronger working relationships with the drivers which helps us increase the quality of the contractors we are using when we need them”. - Scott Barry, Head of Transport
Background:
Advanced Supply Chain offers a complete end-to-end supply chain service, from source to shelf, covering all aspects of supply chain management, global logistics, fulfilment and value-added services. Their transport operation is a stand-alone business unit within the group, operating across 4 sites nationally.
How they use the platform:
Once the planners have allocated out all their own drivers they are able to log into their Connected2 portal and post out all the remaining unallocated shifts to their pool of pre-approved, assessed contract drivers. The driver’s app notifies all the relevant drivers that work is being posted out and they are able to review the details and apply for the work that suits them.
They have also taken advantage of Connected2's the free temp to perm solution, targeting the drivers who operate at the highest standard and are looking for a full time position - Click HERE for the Case Study.
How they improved driver performance:
With the platform’s algorithms matching drivers to shifts, the planning and transport management teams are able to build direct relationships with the drivers. Building up this working relationship makes a big difference with the driver’s engagement. With a closer, direct working relationship it's easier to inform, educate and help drivers to improve their operational performance.
By comparing telematic data we are able to demonstrate that a strong working relationship helps to improve and maintain a high-quality flexible driver pool capable of operating at the same (or potentially higher) standard as your employed drivers.
Historically, contract ‘agency’ drivers have been consistently outperformed by their full-time employees. With Connected2 the barriers are removed and training and development strategies can be used to increase and sustain high levels of operational performance. This improved level of performance generated an average saving of 2p a mile saving on fuel alone.
Increasing operational efficiency:
Increasing the working relationship between the transport desk and the driver helps to improve other areas outside of just a fuel savings too. Drivers feel ‘part of the team’ by communicating directly with the transport desk, which further helps to reduce the risk of no-shows and late cancellations.
”I’ve been an agency driver for a couple of years, been signed-up with quite a few [agencies] and driven at loads of companies over the years. Working through Connected2 is great - All the available work is clearly listed on the app, I submit my timesheets, receipts and track my weekly earnings all through the app. I also get to work closely with the companies too, have a bit of banter with the transport team in the office as well - I know exactly where I stand with them and what needs to be done” - Ash Ryley, Contract Driver
With all team members across management, planning and administration being able to access the platform simultaneously, with their own log-in credentials, it’s easy for transport managers to track and review fulfilment, efficiency and budget instantly on the portal.
Timesheets and receipts are submitted by the drivers digitally, ready for review and approval by the administration team. Digitising this process helps to save huge amounts of processing time and effort when checking and approving timesheets.
“I find the platform easy to use, all the driver’s timesheets and receipts are submitted ready for me to check the hours on their digi card - saves me a lot of time going back and forth with agencies to agree and approve the hours each week” - Keely, Transport Administration
Conclusion:
The Advanced Supply Chain Group, since implementing the Connected2 platform into their business, have streamlined their processes with booking and managing contract drivers at the same time as reducing costs. All processes are digital, helping to reduce paperwork, process duplication and manual entry errors too.
The drivers prefer the digital process too - they are able to pick and choose what work they want to do on their app. Once allocated, the app helps take the pain away from submitting timesheets and chasing for payments - with everything clearly listed on the app they are able to focus on the job they are there to do.
